Their Brightest Rosebud Purple Hue Put On: Shi Jian-Guo Solo Exhibition

“Their Brightest rosebud purple hue put on” is a line from poem Late Spring by Tang dynasty literature giant Han Yu, referring to flowers contending for beauty in the season of magnificence. The flowers of the poem are personified and are referred to the figures in the works of Chinese artist Shi Jian-Guo. Shi’s Eastern beauties are depicted with classic slim brows, almond eyes, plump lips, and elegant postures, manifesting the essence of Chinese aesthetics and culture. The artist uses his rich creativity and imagination to present viewers with moving, pleasing visual and spiritual sensations. The glamour portrayed in the images seems to convey the invisible musical movement of “graceful charm with familiarity emitting through luring posture.” Rich Art invites you to break free from the complexity and exhaustion of daily life in this beautiful season of Summer, and allow yourself to explore the lighthearted wonderworld of the artist.

In the East, ancients favored introversion and quiet, gentle temperament among women. This subject matter is given new life with the interpretation of Shi Jian-Guo. Shi’s women are not only portrayed as confident and independent, but their bold body languages have also given new spiritual meaning to the topic. After admiring the works of Shi, renowned Chinese calligrapher and critic Chen Kuo-Chong remarked: “Where do these women come from? Where are they going? Amid the questions and search, a group of charming women wearing cheongsams with flower patterns appears under the brushstrokes of Shi Jian-Guo. These women seem to be strolling on the city streets or unwinding on a bank filled with willow…Shi creates a unique scenery with the cheery strolls and curvy figures of the women. In the foreground, we see a brightness after wiping off the dust, while in the background lies pureness that is revealed after the glamor is removed.”

Chinese portraits are often composed of lines, favoring simplistic methods over complicated approaches when arranging composition and color. Not only does this reduce the designs to simple forms, but also incorporates the artist’s subjective emotions and aesthetic values. The lines portrayed by ink result in lively depictions that are at the same time surreal, allowing the artist to open an “ideal sphere” of his superior artistic mind which surpasses “nature” through ink painting, establishing Shi Jian-Guo as a central figure among the Chinese contemporary painters of the 60s. Their Brightest Rosebud Purple Hue Put On marks the first solo exhibition of Shi in Taiwan, and Rich Art has selected a series of classic, outstanding works throughout the past decade up until 2018. These works provide a comprehensive view of the past ten years of the artist’s career and his development in style.
