Matías Sánchez

《Pintor, rata y calavera. Larga estancia en el campo》200x200cm 油畫畫布Oil on Canvas 2023

Matías Sánchez is a self-taught artist born in 1972, in Tübingen, Germany, and is currently residing in Seville, Spain. He has developed a signature style of thickly applied oil paint depicting exaggerated and whimsical figures. The expression appears may see weird, yet they possess a playful sense of humor, capturing Sánchez’s imaginative world. When creating, Sánchez does not adhere to specific themes or titles but rather begins with harmonious colors, allowing recurring patterns to naturally emerge as the work progresses. His creations are an exploration of color and paint, blurring the lines between abstraction and figuration.

Sánchez is deeply influenced by painters such as Philip Guston, George Grosz, Otto Dix, Toulouse Lautrec, Pablo Picasso, and Jean-Michel Basquiat, infusing his style with innovation and vitality while incorporating the language of popular culture, thus becoming a reflection of society. In recent years, he has participated in numerous international art fairs, and his works have been collected by institutions such as the USC Fisher Museum of Art, as well as galleries in New York, Los Angeles, Hong Kong, Spain, Paris, and elsewhere.
