Joie de vivre!
Rich Art Gallery
“Joie de vivre (the joy of life)” is a manifestation of the French cultural scene of “Belle Époque” between the late 19th century and World War One. It was a time of prosperity, peace, and optimism, and despite the difficulties and uncertainties brought forth by war, people maintained a positive attitude and were mindful of the joys of the present moment. In contemporary times of global turmoil, we can learn to detach ourselves from obsessive thinking and strive for the freedom and enthusiasm of self-value. Life is filled with “the joy of life” that awaits discovery.
In July 2023, Rich Art is honored to collaborate with four contemporary artists spanning different generations and cultural dimensions, namely Niki Hare (UK), Zdenek Konvalina (The Czech Republic), Geoffrey Bouillot, and Jimere. “Joie de vivre” is a French saying used to express a playful “love for life.” Despite the different chapters and experiences of life, the will of individuals is projected as distinctive visual expressions through love and awareness toward life, translated into condensed manifestations that are interwoven with feelings of joy, brightness, and imagination, weaving into new mindsets and dialogues that guide viewers to savor the different stages of life, which, in the hands of artists, are interpreted through warmth and thoughtfulness. The exhibition is on view between July 22 and September 16, during the summer and autumn; join us to experience the joy of serenity!
Introduction|
Niki Hare
Niki Hare enjoys trying out lots of experimental and different things, exploring ideas of existence and the individual’s perception, she spontaneously creates works that play with layers and narratives.
Born in 1971, Niki Hare is a self-taught British artist who has exhibited her work internationally. At first glance, viewers are immediately attracted by the eye-catching fonts and bright colors in the works of Niki Hare. Through overlapping sentences, Hare’s works depict the personal experience and intentions of existence, which are integrated with the awareness of the passing of time, weaving into a thought-provoking visual diary.
Zdenek Konvalina
Zdenek Konvalina
Zdenek Konvalina’s paintings emphasize the process itself. Movement, be it Physical, Mental or Metaphorical plays an important role in making and thinking about these paintings. The process focusses on probing the dynamics of contrasting qualities [materially and metaphorically]: blurred and defined, distant and immediate, moving and still, exploration of dynamics between variety of tools and individually a pursuit of realization of a subconscious notion, thought, form or shape, memory, reminder or a future note. And along side using various tools [spray paint, airbrush, brushes, oil sticks etc.] it allow for producing an ever changing collection of marks, subsequently letting its’ own language to emerge and build its own vocabulary. In the end, each painting strives to tell its own story, be it a statement or just realization of certain chain of thoughts.
Multidisciplinary artist Zdenek Konvalina (b.1979 Czech) lives and works between London and Berlin. His paintings have been included in group exhibitions in London, Toronto, Montreal and Houston. Before fully devoting himself to a painting practice, Konvalina accomplished a distinguished career as a ballet artist, performing and working around the world in America, Asia and Europe and winning numerous awards for his artistic achievements such as the Rolex Award Toronto 2008 and National Dance Award in UK in 2012. As part of his portfolio Zdenek also has been commissioned to design sets for ballet projects “Impermanence” in Florence in 2010 and “Drops” at the Deutsche Oper, Berlin in 2017, as well as Live Performance/Painting with Guelph Symphony in Canada.
Zdenek Konvalina’s abstract paintings are influenced by the artist’s past experiences as a dancer. The works follow bodily and subconscious feedback and explore the proportions between materiality and the spirit through subtle colors and nuanced brushwork, resulting in unique depictions of the artist’s inner world.
Geoffrey Bouillot
“My hometown, Chalon-sur-Saône has a rich history, being the birthplace of the invention of photography. In fact, the world’s first photograph was taken here, capturing a moment frozen in black and white. This connection to the origins of photography strengthens my ties to my roots…… Japan has had a profound influence on my creative process. The country’s aesthetics, such as the concept of Wabi-sabi have shaped the way I approach my art. The combination of Manga with Italian Futurism, Cubism, and Pop Art stems from my desire to blend different artistic movements and create something unique. “
French born artist in Chalon-sur-Saône (Burgundy) Geoffrey Bouillot, 2009 Graduated from CFA Olivier de Serres (Dijon, France).
Geoffrey Bouillot’s monochrome work series is deeply impacted by Western and Eastern cultures. Based in Japan, Bouillot’s works not only include appropriations of elements from Japanese animation but also incorporate the compositions of Italian Futurism, Cubism, and Pop Art, transforming the animation characters into forms that are not easily recognizable in search of new interactions. The crisp lines and metallic textures resulting from light and shadow lead to a world that is uniquely whimsical and fantastical.
Jimere
Jimere draws inspiration from the unknown plants, flowers, trees, and rocks in everyday life to reference the groups that lack attention or identification in society. In the video, the artist not only explains her creative process but also conveys the stories behind the characters in her artworks, hoping that viewers will adopt an open mind to connect and interact with the beings of the world.
Born in 1997, Jimere is an up-and-coming artist living in Seoul. After graduating from Sookmyung Women University, she was invited to exhibit her works at Schools Des Beaux Arts De Versailles and art institutions in Paris, Seoul and Busan. In 2023, she will present her artworks along with Rich Art for the first time in Taiwan.
Through featuring unknown subject matters, Jimere constructs a narrative about a main subject that is neglected and labeled as an imposter, while conveying the message of countless beings that are overlooked and lack belonging and identification. Through subjective sensory experiences resulting from interaction with society and the environment, the artist defines “imperfection” as the main creative topic, which extends into various storylines. For Jimere, if we can see “imperfection” as forces for reflection and attention, their negative component will disappear. To move viewers away from subjective negativity, the artist created a frame that dissolves the separation between the inside and outside space of the painting, adding spaces for the imagination to the visual focus and granting new life to the original meaning. The artist hopes that viewers will adopt an open mind to connect and interact with the beings of the world.
